June 6, 2018

June has arrived and the annual wave of pre-monsoon heat has come along as well. The heat can be a real challenge for our farmers, but it is also what ushers in so many wonderful crops. Potatoes, blackberries, and summer squash should begin showing up in your baskets over the next few weeks. For now we can keep enjoying all the greens and early season produce that has been incredible thus far.

June is the month when a ton of planting happens. All of the crops that are sensitive to frost have to stay sheltered until June arrives, so that can make for a lot of work just when it gets so hot outside. This past week, Whipstone Farm’s crew planted 15,000 pepper plants. Can you even imagine?! Willowbrook Farm is getting ready to plant winter squash and both farms are constantly reseeding new patches of lettuces for salad mix. Never a dull moment!

Next week is the first week of our flower share. Whipstone Farm’s flowers are gorgeous, organically grown, and local! You can’t get a bouquet like that at Safeway or Whole Foods for only $12! If you would like to add a flower share to your weekly pickup ($144 for 12 weeks), please let me know before Friday.

If you are looking for extra items from Verde Gardener and Willowbrook Farm this week, you can order here. Ordered items will be brought to CSA distributions for you to pick up. Contact Susan or Denise for more information.

Have a beautiful week!
Meghan
